The rise of gender-neutral parenting
According to Ravna Marin Nathanael Siever, a Berlin-based queer gender-neutral parenting author, blogger, and lecturer, the decision not to label a young child a boy or a girl first gained traction in the 1980s, primarily in queer communities.
This occurred at the same time as what they refer to as “the second wave of feminism,” when women rebelled against being stereotyped as homemakers or in particular occupations.
Siever conducted research for their book by speaking with parents and reading decades of gender studies literature.
