‘They can experience what feels best for them’

Gender-neutral parenting differs in practice, and parents’ approaches are frequently personal and influenced by their own societal perceptions and experiences. In English-speaking nations, one option for families is for parents to use they/them pronouns to refer to their children.

These children are referred to as “theyby,” a combination of the words “they” and “baby.”Instead, some parents use a mix of “he” and “she” pronouns.

Others, like Martinson, do not use the terms “boy” or “girl,” but they do feel at ease using their child’s birth sex pronoun (unless the child requests otherwise), giving neutral alternatives like “child,” “friend,” or “sibling” priority.
