Tenfold boost in power
According to Sorbom, the new superconductors are strong enough to increase fusion power by approximately a factor of ten in comparison to conventional superconducting technology, even though they do not quite double the field strength.
A series of potential enhancements to the design of reactors are triggered by this significant improvement. It is anticipated that the world’s largest planned fusion reactor, known as ITER, which is being built in France, will cost approximately $40 billion.
According to Sorbom and the other members of the MIT team, the new design, which is approximately half the diameter of ITER and was constructed prior to the availability of new superconductors, would produce approximately the same amount of power for a fraction of the price and take less time to construct.
