A new way to make sheets of graphene

The potential of graphene as a material for a variety of new electronic devices has prompted researchers all over the world to investigate the substance in search of brand-new applications. However, the difficulty of fabricating the material on an industrial scale has been one of the biggest barriers to its wider use.

The use of tiny flakes, typically obtained by quickly removing a piece of sticky tape from a block of graphite—a low-tech method that does not lend itself to manufacturing—has been the method of choice for the initial work with the carbon material, which forms an atomic-scale mesh and is only one atom thick.

Since then, the goal has been to make graphene films on metal foil, but researchers have had trouble getting the graphene onto useful substrates from the foil.
