Attracted to magnetism

Refrigerator magnets laid the groundwork for Liu’s studies of spin electronics and computer memory hardware. As a small kid, he asked why a magnet would adhere to the refrigerator. That early interest assisted with starting his advantage in science and math.

His interest in magnetism and its applications in computers grew as he delved deeper into those subjects in high school and college, learning more about electronics, physics, and chemistry.Liu found the ideal position when he was offered a PhD program at Cornell University and the chance to work in a group studying magnetic materials.

According to what he explains, “I spent the next five or six years looking into new and more efficient ways to generate electron spin current and use that to write information into magnetic computer memories.”
