The centrality of technology in our lives has sparked concern and opposition.The backlash against technology is not a single movement and encompasses a wide range of diverse ideologies.[97] Luddism, a movement against early automation in textile production, is the earliest known revolt against technology.
A process that is referred to as technological unemployment had taken place as a direct consequence of automation.Ted Kaczynski, a terrorist from the United States, carried out a series of attacks across the country from the 1970s to the 1990s. He also wrote the Unabomber Manifesto, which criticized the negative effects that technology has had on nature and human freedom.

It was partly inspired by The Technological Society by Jacques Ellul.The off-the-grid movement, for example, advocates a return to nature and a break from technology.The ecovillage movement aims to restore harmony between nature and technology[99].
